Nice talk; I especially enjoyed the end of the episode with that Radiohead song playing while the Byrde family overlooks the river. It’s a powerful moment where Marty’s leadership is palpable to the viewers and his family, who sort of rally behind him.
I also admire Wendy strength: she’s able to absorb the shocking news of Del’s killings and their money laundering task at hand pretty much in stride. I mean, Marty straight up tells her: “Liz is dead, Wendy, she’s dissolving in a barrel next to the one they stuffed Bruce into” (granted, I’m sure he got a vengeful kick out of dishing out this horrible stuff to her) but she takes it in stride and is ready to go the next day. Perhaps this courage is what had attracted Wendy to him in the first place, but which had been buried in their comfortable life, along with her sense of appreciation of him.
Even though it’s a tragic, violent tale, Marty and Wendy embrace the story and take full control. There’s no room to feel guilty or arrogant when Del’s threatening your life: you just do what you’ve gotta do to launder that $8 mil. You unleash every ounce of potential hiding behind all the bullshit, only to discover that this is true freedom while the former life was a miserable prison. This is the joyous, ironic, Art of NGF story underlying this story, and all stories for that matter.
